Users Coming Off Slimming Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People purchasing these medications should be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have come off the medication report a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you become ravenous," described one woman.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
