Tuchel Wants Bellingham's Aggression So Long As The Three Lions' Ace Sets Aside His Ego at the Door.

A single omission was enough. A second one and it could have seemed vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is extremely shrewd not to know that winning the World Cup demands help from Jude Bellingham, although it is also Bellingham's responsibility to adapt to the strategic frameworks and squad hierarchies required with England now that he is back in Tuchel's supportive environment.

Tuchel wants his aggressive mentality, his passion, but it is about using it constructively. Individual quality matters but the squad know from bitter experience that there is a cost when celebrity dominates. Nevertheless, a message has been sent.

Bellingham had plenty to reflect on after being left out of last month’s squad. He watched England book their place at next summer’s World Cup without him. He watched the young talent excel as a high-pressing attacking midfielder. He listened as Tuchel talk about valuing the team's dynamism and principles. Naturally, Bellingham has responded in top form, finding the back of the net for Real Madrid against Barcelona and the Italian side. His selection was inevitable; a second snub would have put his tournament chances hanging by a thread.

The hope is that Tuchel will have a midfielder focused on pressuring the opposition instead of teammates. After all, on a pure footballing level, there is no advantage to starting a conflict with an elite performer in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time out of the team has demonstrated that playing for one's country is a precious, precarious thing. The coach, for his part, can now throw a protective shield for the youngster after proving that he is unafraid to take tough decisions.

“There is no problem regarding him, and no concern with the character,” Tuchel commented. “Bellingham displays that aggression. It takes that kind of fire to achieve greatness that he reached. We all need to support him and build a atmosphere where he can [have] that intensity in matches and towards the goals we are striving for as a team.”

The star dominated much of the focus at Tuchel’s squad announcement for this month’s final group games versus Serbia and the other. Who else? Indeed, how about Phil Foden? This is another prodigious playmaker requiring support and direction. Foden has not played for England since spring and has struggled to hit the heights recently but the boss could not ignore the player after his performance in his club's victory versus the German side this week.

The question, however, is the best way to deploy the various creators at available. Rogers and Eberechi Eze merit inclusion and there will be a strong case to include Cole Palmer once he recovers from a persistent groin problem. Would taking multiple creators to the tournament be too many? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the optimal mix at Euro 2024. He compromised by squeezing both stars into the same XI, restricting Harry Kane’s style as a result.

It is hard to see Tuchel repeating that if it harms the attacking balance. There is room for one No 10, with speedy wingers on the wings. Clarity is beneficial. Bellingham is in as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first time, is a No 8 and the returning Adam Wharton will vie with another player as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no wide role for the City star, who must play central. Tuchel prefers him close to the striker. “It does not make sense to ask Phil: ‘You are needed on the pitch but no spot exists in your preferred role, can you play the left side? Can you play other flank?’” he stated. “He is to feature in the advanced midfield role, through the center. I've long had this fantasy about him for years. I think it fits his style best.”

He agreed there are times when Foden has appeared uncomfortable in an England shirt. “One senses almost like, ‘Does he like it?’ And a player like him who has such natural delight to play football, then obviously something is not right, whether it's his role, the setup, it's unclear.

“In my opinion he is also so used to playing for Man City in a particular setup, to have a defined role. I think he profits a lot from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? In which positions should I turn? When should I to push the tempo? Where do I have to defensive duties?”

The manager mentioned one star making runs for easy finishes and the other scoring strikes from 18 yards. He said he has a extended list of 60 players. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have dropped out. Nico O’Reilly is rewarded for his fine form for Manchester City at left-back. Intrigue abounds.

The omission of Ollie Watkins means there is no direct replacement for the captain in the selection. Interestingly, Tuchel hinted at deploying the playmaker as a false 9 versus Serbia or the other. Other options, the United forward, the midfielder and Jarrod Bowen are other options if he be absent. With qualification secured, this is an opportunity for trying new things.

Meanwhile, it is also a moment to get Kane’s relationship with his teammate going. It is remarkable that one must look back to Bellingham assisting Kane to score in a friendly win versus Scotland in September 2023 to find the one and only time in many appearances for the national team when the pair linked up for a goal. The coach will be aware that the two stars only exchanged the ball once during the team's ties with one opponent and another at the European Championship. The connection is lacking.

“At this point eventually it becomes the duty of the players,” he stated. He does not shy away to speak frankly. Remains a feeling of Bellingham being on trial. He may not be guaranteed to begin against Serbia and Albania. Tuchel desires him onside but he will be observing him closely. Leave the ego at the door. Doing so could turn a very strong England team into an superior one.
