"Do you know when you'll be interviewing the band?" a text arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can become their extra sister."

However, there remains one problem: The sender also longs to be Haim's newest recruit. What's more, we are not alone. A host of high-profile admirers have publicly begged for the position.

One thing is obvious something is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey playing gigs at local delicatessens with their parents. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy Award hopefuls.

Like all the best ensembles, they're a inseparable unit. Their music videos often feature them striding in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such boundless exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a drum kit'," says Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That is the ultimate honor. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate people to make music."

"Therefore anyone is invited to be the fourth member of Haim."

Historic Nod

The band are connecting from home, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in the running for the prize.

"I follow the lists every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the accolade is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant achievement," adds Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the pioneers that came before us."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The project came out of a time of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that odd in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The words track breakups and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them working out in real life who they aspire to be.

"I adore summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to actively work on shutting out the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That recent resilience demanded a new sound – more organic and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Laughter

The band's candor inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic horror stories.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Path

You can clearly sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their standing in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an international fan base.

But Haim will forever be their number one focus.

"We have been playing music since I was little," says Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
