A Tragic Change Just One Year Has Caused in the US

Twelve months back, the environment was entirely separate. Ahead of the American presidential vote, considerate residents could recognize America's significant faults – its injustices and disparity – yet they still could identify it as the United States. A democratic nation. A land where constitutional order meant something. A country led by a honorable and upright leader, notwithstanding his elderly years and declining health.

Nowadays, this autumn, many of us scarcely know the country we reside in. People alleged as illegal immigrants are detained and forced into transport, sometimes blocked from fair treatment. The eastern section of the White House – is being torn down for a grotesque event space. The president is targeting his opponents or supposed enemies and demanding legal authorities surrender an enormous amount of taxpayer money. Uniformed troops are deployed to US urban areas with deceptive justifications. The military command, rebranded the Defense Ministry, has – in effect – rid itself of regular press examination while it uses possibly reaching close to a trillion USD in public funds. Institutions, attorney offices, journalism organizations are yielding from leader's menaces, and billionaires are treated like members of the royal family.

“The United States, only a few months ahead of its 250th birthday as the planet's foremost free society, has crossed the brink into autocracy and fascism,” Garrett Graff, commented recently. “Finally, swifter than I thought feasible, it occurred here.”

Every morning starts to new horrors. It is challenging to understand – and distressing to accept – just how far gone our nation is, and the rapid pace with which it occurred.

Nevertheless, it is known that the president was properly voted in. Following his highly troubling first term and even after the warnings that came with the understanding of the rightwing blueprint – even after Trump himself declared plainly he would act as an autocrat solely at the start – sufficient voters elected him over Kamala Harris.

While alarming as today's circumstances is, it’s even scarier to realize that we have only been several months into this administration. How will another 36 months of this downfall leave us? And if that timeframe becomes an prolonged era, since there is not anyone to restrain this ruler from determining that another term is required, perhaps for security concerns?

Certainly, all is not lost. There are legislative votes the coming year that may bring a different political equilibrium, if Democrats regain the Senate or House of Congress. There exist public servants who are trying to apply some accountability, like representatives that are launching an investigation concerning the try to cash appropriation by federal prosecutors.

And a presidential election in the next cycle could begin our journey to recovery precisely as the prior selection placed us on this regrettable path.

We see millions of Americans protesting in public spaces of their cities, like they performed last weekend during anti-authority protests.

An ex-cabinet member, wrote recently that “the dormant powerhouse of America is rising”, exactly as before after the Communist witch-hunt era in that decade or throughout the sixties activism or throughout the seventies crisis.

During those times, the listing ship finally returned to balance.

He claims he understands the signs of that resurgence and notices it unfolding currently. For proof, he references the recent massive protests, the widespread, bipartisan pushback regarding a television host's removal and the almost universal refusal by journalists to sign government requirements they only publish what is sanctioned.

“The slumbering entity always remains inactive till certain corruption grows too toxic, some action so disrespectful of societal benefit, specific cruelty so disruptive, that it is forced but to awaken.”

It's a hopeful perspective, and I value Reich’s experienced view. Perhaps he will turn out correct.

Meanwhile, the crucial issues remain: will the nation regain its footing? Is it possible to restore its status internationally and its commitment to legal principles?

Or do we need to admit that the 250-year-old experiment functioned for a period, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?

My negative thoughts tells me that the second option is correct; that everything might be finished. My optimistic spirit, however, convinces me that we have to attempt, in whatever ways possible.

In my case, working in journalism analysis, that involves pushing media professionals to commit, more thoroughly, to their purpose of scrutinizing authority. For different individuals, it might involve participating in political races, or planning demonstrations, or finding ways to protect voting rights.

Less than a year ago, we were in a separate situation. A year from now? Or after another term? The reality is, we cannot predict. All we can do is try to not give up.

What Provides Me Encouragement Today

The engagement I have during teaching with new media professionals, who are equally visionary and grounded, {always
